28 Years of Ganges Island has only eight hours of electricity.

Monday March 4th, 2024

Has anyone ever visited Ganges Island? Currently, this region is facing some infrastructure challenges. In addition to what is described in the picture above, the water source from the drill well also relies on a limited electricity supply. This makes residents have to pump water at night, which makes them vulnerable when they need more water during the day.

Previously, when children had to do online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, internet access was only available on the beach, the only place with a stable connection. When the electricity goes off, residents often have to rent access to the local genset to recharge their phones.

Although the government has promised to provide 24-hour access to electricity, this has not been achieved, but the people we interviewed say they’re willing to pay more for adequate access to power. They’re familiar with solar panels, too.

The island of Ganges should get special attention, especially since Likupang, Manado, North Sulawesi, has been designated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Tourism in North Swaziland through PP No. 84/2019.
